The Security Challenge of Dark Data
What you don't know WILL hurt you.

First of all, every security project begins with understanding the data that needs protecting: determining where data is coming from and how it is stored; plus who has access and how the company needs to deploy that data.

Only then – when you have a complete understanding of the data -- can you protect it while maintaining its viability for the business.  You can do this because you feel fairly confident you know where your sensitive data is.  For example, in protecting a database, it is standard to identify the location of sensitive data by the column names.

Unfortunately, more than 70% of your sensitive data isn’t in those places, after all.  Most of it is stored in undocumented and hard-to-find locations such as complex columns, free text fields, and temporary tables.

So what is dark data, how can it hurt your association, and what can you do to protect it? Read this article written specifically for Abstractly Speaking by MENTIS, pioneer in the field of data and application security.

The Top 15 Tips to Effectively Manage Remote Employees

With 50% of the workforce working in some sort of telecommuting role and 80 to 90% of all employees saying they would like to work remotely at least part of the time, according to Global Workplace Analytics, offering remote opportunities is an attractive way to gain productive workers.

While this is the ultimate work scenario for many employees, it can be difficult for many managers to come to grips with. You may feel like you have no control over the situation or find that gaining a trust level with a remote team can be a bit of a challenge. Yet, it is the way of the future of the workplace, and managers need to adapt to make the situation work for everyone involved.

To give managers some guidance, 15 members of Forbes Coaches Council provide top tips for companies to both embrace and better manage a remote workforce. Here’s what they recommend:

By Fred Miller
Speaker, International Coach, and Author of the book, “No Sweat Public Speaking!”

By far, the most read and listened to posts I’ve written and recorded, over many years, are ones about Closing a presentation. They are favored because of their immense importance.

This is because of The Law of Primacy and Recency.

This rule says an audience best remembers the first and last things they hear and see. Those are the bookends of your speech and why, as a speaker, you want to have a strong opening and a strong closing.

It’s crucial because the last thing you say and do, is the first thing the audience is going to remember. Many speakers struggle with developing and delivering that part of their talk.

Important: The Closing comes after your Q&A and has two parts.  They are...

Books, Articles, Blogs, Podcasts...

What have you read or listened to lately that you found interesting, inspiring, and shareable?

Darren Barnes – Mira Project Manager
I’ve been listening to a lot of history podcasts lately. Some of the best are Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History – a deep dive into monumental historical events.  Long episodes and totally worth it.  My favorite episodes were his ‘Blueprint for Armageddon’ series detailing the big events of World War 1. Another is Malcolm Gladwell’s Revisionist History – a sometimes poignant, other times quirky examination of the smaller parts of history.  I have also been watching pop culture YouTube video essays like Lindsay Ellis – My favorite series is an examination of academic film school topics within the Transformers movie franchise.  Both informative and ridiculous. Just Write, Nerdwriter1 and Lessons from the Screenplay – all feature different YouTube creators who offer thoughts on effective storytelling, especially from movies.

Kellyn Danehey Macon – Mira Project Manager
Over the past few weeks, I have been on the hunt for new podcasts. While I love my regulars, I needed to spice things up. And nothing says spicy like a podcast about literature! Reading Women is a podcast that discusses books written by or about women. The hosts have both earned their M.A. in English Literature, so listening makes you feel like a member in a smart book club. I also appreciate how the podcast focuses on embracing diversity. For example, this month’s theme highlights Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month. And the fun doesn’t stop there! The hosts have also created a group on Goodreads. The 3000+ members keeps the conversation going after the episode is over. While I am still new to the podcast, the first book I read at their recommendation, The Cutting Season by Attica Locke, was fantastic.

Books, Articles, Blogs, Podcasts...what have you read or listened to lately that you found interesting, inspiring, and shareable?

Justin Blanchette - Mira President
The Daily by the New York Times is my go-to morning podcast. It always has a great 25-minute current events story that I listen to as I make my breakfast and have some coffee. After that I run through Instagram and check out some artists that I follow and any new paintings they may have posted. It’s inspiring to see people creating such amazing things. Check out @tedcollier.art, a local St Louis artist and @gagosian, they are a gallery always sharing great stuff. Trust me.

Lisa Albin - Mira Project Manager
Anytime Reply All posts a new episode, I tune in to see what story the hosts have to share.  They inspire me to think outside the box and investigate when there doesn’t seem to be a clear answer.  I found myself rewinding 15 seconds often on “The Snapchat Thief” and “Long Distance” to ensure I didn’t miss a word.  And don’t we all wonder if our phones are listening to us?  After listening to “Is Facebook Syping on You?” I found myself sharing the team’s exploration with friends and colleagues.
